Skin Type: I’m pretty fair, and my skin tends to be dehydrated. Once in a while I have hormonal chin or nose breakouts, and I have sun damage from when I got burnt as a teenager.
The Best Things I Ever Did for My Own Skin: Preventing and repairing sun damage. I got serious about sun protection about 15 years ago, when I began to see the damage in my client’s faces – every woman in Los Angeles has pigmentation on the left side of her face from driving. I wear SPF 45 when I’m exercising outdoors and SPF 30 the rest of the time.
I’ve had Intense Pulsed Light Treatments to repair hyperpigmentation. And I use an ascorbic acid serum on my face, because it’s a strong antioxidant that fights free radicals and sun damage.
What I’d Never Do: Pick at my skin. There’s an epidemic out there. I had a model client who was totally sabotaging her career by picking zits. I swear I’m going to start Pickers Anonymous.
My Best Tip: Vary your skin routine according to the season and the state of your skin. For instance, I don’t like to use too much retinol in the summer because it makes the skin photosensitive, and during the winter, I use heavier moisturizers because that’s when skin needs the extra hydration. And I alternate my cleansers, using one with salicylic acid when I’m breaking out, and another with azelaic, a brightening ingredient, if I’m worried about redness.
